The attempt of the arts

Dear friend,

You walk past a flower, you see the twinkle in the water, you hear the song of the bird or watch a sunset. In such moments you feel something, but what is that ‘something’? I don’t know, but what I do know is that that is exactly what the artist is trying to express. Whether in a poem, a photograph, a painting or a piece of music, it is that moment, that feeling when you are so moved by life, when all of life seems to come together in that one instantaneous moment of beauty. When everything seems clear, needing no answers, that is exactly what the artist is trying to proclaim; to give expression to that ‘something’, a tribute to that moment that feels so alive and of which he feels that the only thing left for him is to turn that ‘something’ into ‘something’. It is this attempt that we call the arts.
