Recognising the sacred
Dear All,
Does sacredness depend on the human? When can something be considered sacred? Whether an act, an object, a place, a book, a bird, a branch or a mountain can be considered sacred depends only on the extent to which that thing is encountered in recognition of its sacredness. A church service can be just as sacred as preparing a dish, as tying your shoelaces, as participating in a sports competition, as making a painting, as having a conversation, but all on the condition that we can recognise it as such. When we talk about whether something is sacred or not, we are actually talking about a concept, a human perception in which we attribute part of the sacred (life in totality) to 'something' compared to something else. I think it is not relevant to question whether something is sacred because this would imply that something can or cannot be sacred and in that we undermine the sacredness of life in its entirety. No, the sacred does not depend on anything, life is sacred in itself but whether we experience it as sacred depends entirely on the extent to which we recognise how the sacred manifests itself in everything. In every place, in every being, in every moment.
“The sacred does not depend on anything, life is sacred in itself.”
May your week be full of wonder, sven
